The Three Musketeers

The Three Musketeers is a French historical adventure novel written by Alexandre Dumas first published in 1844. The novel follows the main protagonist of D’Artagnan, an impoverished nobleman from Gascony, who travels to Paris to follow his dream of joining the King’s Musketeers. In the course of his journey he meets three musketeers by the names of Athos, Porthos and Aramis and the story follows their various escapades.

In this section students consider the historical context of the novel and how readers may have received the story at the time of its publication. Students are asked to explore the scene in Gascony and examine the items referencing D’Artagnan’s fight with the Cardinal’s men.

Students are asked to consider the themes of friendship and loyalty. They are encouraged to consider the characteristics of the Musketeers and to think about the influence of their friendship on their actions and choices. Students should explore the courtyard and look for the Musketeers. They are asked to think about how their friendship influences their actions and choices.

In this section students look at the influence of love, romance, and honour on the actions of the characters in the story. Students are asked to look for imagery representing Milady and her part in the story.
