Chemistry Experiment - Electrolysis

by ClassVR

Description

The scene lets students explore and review an experiment designed to develop scientific enquiry skills. By reviewing the apparatus, and key information, students will review and evaluate the experiment to deepen their understanding on obtaining evidence and data to draw a suitable conclusion about their observation. In this case, drafting hypotheses and using qualitative data to determine the outcome of electrolysed aqueous solutions. # Learning objectives 1: Use a range of solutions that will be electrolysed.{.info} 2: Develop a hypothesis to predict what happens to solutions when they are electrolysed.{.info} 3: Use qualitative data to determine the outcome of the electrolyses of solutions.{.info} # 1: Experimental Design{.objective .objective1} In this section reviewing the apparatus needed to carry out electrolysis of aqueous solutions will lead to a suitable method being produced to produce qualitative data. Students will explore the scene and review the apparatus used. They will describe the method used to obtain qualitative data for the electrolysis of the selected solutions. # 2: Hypothesis{.objective .objective2} In this section a use of hypotheses to predict the outcome of a chemical reaction will be reviewed. Knowing which aqueous solutions will be electrolysed, students will predict the products that will be produced. Students will produce hypotheses and express them as electrolysis half equations for the chemical reactions that will happen at the cathode and anode. # 3: Qualitative Data{.objective .objective3} In this section the importance of data analysis will be described and what purpose it serves during an investigation. Qualitative data will be described with examples to determine whether the hypotheses were correct or not. Students will evaluate the qualitative data and determine what the data shows regarding the electrolysis tests carried out for the selected aqueous solutions. # Teacher Resources ### Download Teacher Notes [![Teacher Notes and Quiz](https://data.avncloud.com/activities/795058/icon.png?date=1678200913&size=458195&md5=c9d4705dc7b08678ecb4ea77fc7dfdb9)](https://data.avncloud.com/activities/795058/files/Chemistry%20Experiment+%E2%80%93+Electrolysis+Teacher+Notes+1.pdf?date=1678200925&size=929444&md5=871a58a8a66c196a567031246e8dcf89) ### Student Quiz Answers Document [![Answers](https://data.avncloud.com/activities/795060/icon.png?date=1678200961&size=283618&md5=79d21c7de03a65476691408e3f6a7c5b)](https://data.avncloud.com/activities/795060/files/Chemistry%20Experiment+%E2%80%93+Electrolysis+Teacher+Notes+2.pdf?date=1678200972&size=534849&md5=11f618201ef20f09133bd823f5c515cb) ### Download Student Quiz Document [![Quiz](https://data.avncloud.com/activities/795062/icon.png?date=1678201008&size=161165&md5=fa1e828e75e02e8842ff53e3f62b9645)](https://data.avncloud.com/activities/795062/files/Chemistry%20Experiment+%E2%80%93+Electrolysis+Teacher+Notes+3.pdf?date=1678201015&size=94394&md5=6d86c0f8b7e8426eb1f3e435ed9d01a4) # Science Labs Sample Questions **Chemistry Experiment – Electrolysis** ## Practice Question 1. Copper Chloride is an ionic compound. When dissolved in water it forms copper chloride solution. Copper Chloride solution can undergo electrolysis. 1a. Give the name of the electrolyte used in this electrolysis. 1b. The ions present in the electrolyte are Cu^2+^, Cl^-^, H^+^ and OH^-^. What compound do the H^+^ and OH^-^ ions come from? 1c. Complete the half equation for the reaction that occurs at the positive electrode during electrolysis of Copper Chloride solution. _______Cl^-^ Cl~2~ + _______e^-^ 1d. Give the half equation for the reaction that occurs at the negative electrode. ## Mark scheme 1a. Water 1b. Water 1c. 2Cl^-^ Cl~2~ + 2e^-^ 1d. Cu^2+^ + 2e^-^ Cu The purpose of this question is to allow students to predict and identify the outcome of a chemical change during electrolysis. In addition to that, they should be able to represent it as half equations at the negative and positive electrode.
