The scene lets students explore and review an experiment designed to develop scientific enquiry skills. By reviewing the apparatus, and key information, students will review and evaluate the experiment to deepen their understanding on obtaining evidence and data to draw a suitable conclusion about their observation. In this case, preparing chromatographs of a range of known coloured solution and an unknown solution to compare. # Learning objectives 1: Be able to plan an experiment to separate coloured substances by paper chromatography.{.info} 2: Determine the difference between coloured substances by calculating the Rf values of test samples.{.info} # Experimental Design{.objective .objective1} In this section the apparatus will be reviewed, and the method needed to set up the chromatography experiment will be described. Students will review the method and outline a step-by-step process for the experiment. They will also need to identify any steps that could be added to make the experiment valid when comparing a range of solutions. # The Results {.objective .objective2} In this section a description of what the results show when a chromatograph is produced. The size of the molecules is referenced to understand their stationary phase, and how this allows a comparison between different coloured solutions. Exploring the scene, students will see a range of chromatographs and evaluate how useful they are. They will determine if the examples are reliable and what can be done to improve the reliability. # Calculating the Rf Value{.objective .objective3} In this section a description of the Rf value will be outlined and the information needed from the chromatographs to obtain the value. Providing they are reliable, each coloured solution will produce a specific Rf value that can be used to determine what an unknown solution is, against a known solution. Students will be asked to consider what measurements are needed, and between which points are they measured so that the Rf value can be calculated. # # Teacher Resources ### Download Teacher Notes [](https://data.avncloud.com/activities/795050/files/Chemistry%20Experiment+%E2%80%93+Chromatography+Teacher+Notes+1.pdf?date=1678200071&size=810853&md5=62af33c9440889441ec050479f1fa86e) ### Student Quiz Answers Document [](https://data.avncloud.com/activities/795052/files/Chemistry%20Experiment+%E2%80%93+Chromatography+Teacher+Notes+2.pdf?date=1678200108&size=439277&md5=7615645e32f6935914e491709e011177) ### Download Student Quiz Document [](https://data.avncloud.com/activities/795053/files/Chemistry%20Experiment+%E2%80%93+Chromatography+Teacher+Notes+3.pdf?date=1678200143&size=95195&md5=4722e656f445cdf971fa4d4ba64cfba3)
