# Objectives:

Understand what verb is.{.info}

Understand what a noun is.{.info}

Differentiate between verbs and nouns using the context of a nursery rhyme.{.info}

This scene will take students on a journey through the traditional English nursery rhyme of ‘Hey, Diddle, Diddle’. They will both listen and read the text of the nursery rhyme and identify the verbs and nouns.



# What is a nursery rhyme?{.objective .objective1}

A nursery rhyme is a short and simple traditional song or poem typically intended for children. ‘Hey, Diddle, Diddle’ is a traditional English nursery rhyme thought to date back hundreds of years and is a nonsense verse featuring common characters.

Students can click on the link to the audio and listen to the rhyme. In the scene they can look for the characters and text of the song and describe what they are doing.



# What is a verb?{.objective .objective2}

A verb is an action word. It describes what someone is doing or feeling.

Within the scene is a giant open book, inside are the definitions of verbs and nouns for students to refer to.

The nursery rhyme text has been split into four sections with each section featuring characters from the verse. Next to the written text are red and green coloured, interactive X’s. Students should move the green X to mark the words which are verbs.



# What is a noun?{.objective .objective3}

A noun is an object, the name of something, a person or a place. There are two types of nouns, common nouns (place, person or object), and proper nouns (specific person, place or object). Proper nouns use a capital letter because they are referring to a particular thing.

Within the scene is a giant open book, inside are the definitions of verbs and nouns for students to refer to.
