Welcome to the Silent Letter Gallery, where the artwork is coming to life! Your students will test their silent letter knowledge in this interactive scene.

# Why do we have silent letters in English?{.objective .objective1}

In this section, students are given some examples of origins of words which feature silent letters. English has borrowed words from lots of different languages, including Latin, French, and German. Sometimes, the silent letters in English words are kept from these languages.

Students are asked to consider other letters that can be silent.

# The Silent Letter Gallery{.objective .objective2}

The Silent Letter Gallery is split into four corridors. Along each one, are objects within the artwork which feature their corresponding silent letter. Students should identify the name of the object and take note of the silent letter and then find the matching word on one of the gallery screens located at the end of each corridor.

The gallery screens will feature a list of words with the silent letter missing. Students should choose the correct silent letter from the selection at each screen and place the letter in their chosen word.

Students will have words featuring the following four silent letters to investigate:

- Silent B
- Silent H
- Silent K
- Silent W
