Description

Wallsend Hospital was built on land donated by the Newcastle-Wallsend Coal Company.  It was opened in 1893 as the Wallsend Miner’s District Hospital. It served the people of Wallsend and surrounding suburbs for almost 100 years until the New South Wales Government closed it in 1991 after the opening of the John Hunter Hospital.  The buildingas are still in use today and are used for ancillary health services and aged care.  There is also a small museum keeping the history of the hospital alive.
