Description

Rod-shaped bacteria are called bacilli. An example shaped as bacillus bacteria is Bacillus anthracis, the bacterium that causes anthrax. But not all bacilli are pathogenic. This group includes the genus of Lactobacillus, bacteria which are commonly found in yogurts, where they can be beneficial. Some bacilli are used in biotechnology, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, which helps to create a genetically modified plant. Moraxella bovis is a reperesentative of diplobacilli, which causes kidney inflammation in cattle. Among streptobacilli belongs for instance Streptobacillus moniliformis, that can be transferred to humans from rodents. The disease manifests by fever and nausea. Among the bacteria, against which we can protect with a vaccine, belongs coccobacillus Haemophilus influenzae, causing harmful severe pneumonia. One of the most dangerous bacteria in this group is Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which has the shape of palisades. It is the bacteria that cause diphtheria. Fortunately, we've got an effective defense against it in the form of vaccination.
