Description

Electroblemma bifida is an armoured spider preserved in amber of Cretaceous age (99 million years old) from Myanmar. This specimen had a lot of bubbles in the amber which obscured parts of it, but the typical bizarre long projection with two horns, which give the spider its species name, was visible clearly enough. The projection used to bore the animal’s eyes. Projecting beyond the chelicerae in this male specimen are the pedipalps which have some complicated structures for transferring sperm to the female during mating.

Armoured spiders of the family Tetrablemmidae have characteristically hard cuticle, impenetrable to spider wasps, which hunt spiders and lay their eggs inside them. Because of their tough cuticle, tetrablemmids are not troubled by these parasites.
