Description

Mosquitoes are highly evolved insects that date back to the Cretaceous period, over 79 million years ago. Even though they are small insects, the have played a major role in history! Mosquitoes and the diseases they cause have led to mass migrations of people and animals, changed the course of wars, and killed millions.

Like all insects, they have 3 main body parts, 6 legs, and a protective exoskeleton. Female mosquitoes bite to obtain blood proteins needed to lay eggs. She uses complex sensors on her antennae, maxillary palps, and proboscis to detect carbon dioxide, chemical odors, and heat released by animals. Her compound eyes and antennas detect movement and sound and also help lead her to her next blood meal.
