Description

The internal organs of the mosquito are amazing! Mosquitoes have an open circulatory system. Instead of veins and arteries, clear hemolymph (similar to our blood) is pumped throughout their bodies by a long, tube-like heart which expands and contracts. This action bathes the muscles and organs with oxygen and nutrients. Mosquitoes have a crop where sugary nectar is digested, and a larger stomach for digesting blood.

The mosquito’s biting proboscis is a complex series of tools used to detect, probe, pierce, and extract plant juices or blood. When a female mosquito bites, her saliva can spread viruses and parasites along with special chemicals that numb your skin, keep your blood flowing freely, and causes that itchy red bump!
