Description

Panther chameleon (Furcifer pardalis) is one of the largest species of chameleons and can grow up to half a meter. Chameleons are known for their ability to actively change colors that express their current mood and is an important way of communication between individuals. Five fingers (two and three) are grown together making it easier to grasp branches. Chameleons´ eyes have fused eyelids and may move and focus independently. Another unique organ is the tongue, which is often as long as its body and can be shot out with an extreme speed to catch a prey in less than 0.07 seconds. The shooting apparatus consists of the hyoid bone, muscle and cartilage system while the speed is gained mainly due to the extremely rapid shrinkage of the specialized tongue muscles.
