Description

The area of Nine-Banded Armadillo extends from the southern USA on the North to the Argentina on the South, armadillos are also found on Islands of Trinidad, Tobago and Grenade.

Armadillos are able to inhabit various biotopes from lowlands on the sea level up to 2,000 m ASL, however the most typical for them are the arid or semi-arid ecosystems, savannas and semi-deserts.

Armadillos spend days in a dens and they become active at dusk and during the night, when they are searching for food consisting of insects and their larvae, bird eggs, small vertebrates and also fruits and other parts of plants.

The armadillos have a high rate of reproduction. After the mating and successful fertilization the further development is interrupted and it continues again so the young are born into the favorable period of the year. The single zygote typically decays into multiple developing embryos of the same sex, this phenomenon is called polyembryony.
