Description

Influenza is a disease caused by a virus. Influenza virus is one of the viruses whose genetic information is stored in the form of ribonucleic acid (RNA). One key feature of the influenza virus is its great variability. With this feature it easily overcomes the body's defense system. The influenza virus probably comes from water birds, but it's spread among many birds and mammals. Except people, even poultry and also dolphins and ferrets may suffer from the flu.

There are many different subtypes of influenza viruses. They differ among themselves, inter alia, in the particular form of protein H and N which are at the surface of the virus. Currently, 16 different types of proteins H and nine different types of proteins of N are known. When we read about the H1N1 virus, it means that the H and N protein types are marked with the number 1.
