Haircap Moss – Gametophytes

by Corinth

Description

Haircap moss creates large clumps that sustain water in the forest floor. The clumps consist of individual plants. Their green stem is simple and bears small pointed leaves. Separate male and female plants give rise to gametes. The sperm (male gamete) moves about humid environment and fuses with the egg cell (female gamete). This gives rise to the seta on the top of the female plant. The seta ends with a capsule where spores form. The spores then germinate to create a new plant.
