Haircap Moss – Protonema

by STEAM3D

Description

Haircap moss forms dense clumps that retain moisture on the forest floor. Each clump consists of individual plants with simple green stems bearing small, pointed leaves. Separate male and female plants produce gametes, with sperm (the male gamete) moving through the moist environment to fuse with an egg cell (the female gamete). This fusion results in the formation of a stalk, or seta, at the top of the female plant. The seta terminates in a capsule where spores develop. Once released, these spores germinate to create new plants. ## Keywords Plantae Bryophyta Bryopsida Polytrichales Polytrichaceae Polytrichum Polytrichum formosum
