One of the best known species is Neocalamites merianii from the Triassic of Germany. Plants are up to 2 m high, with the main stems reaching 2–5 cm in diameter, bearing apically relatively small strobili. Stems and lateral branches have nodal whorls of grasslike, single-veined leaves, each up to 15 cm long.
