Plesiosaurus belongs to a group of smaller or medium-sized Plesiosaurids. Their length exceeded to 2‒4 meters. The genus is characterized by having a long neck, small head and typical indentation (slender and thin conical teeth). Gatrolites (i.e. stones used for food grinding) were recorded as a stomach content. Limbs are strongly modified into four massive paddles. The tail is shorter and massive. Genus Plesiosaurus inhabited the Lower Jurassic seas of Europe (200‒176 ma).
