Archaefructus

by Corinth

Description

A herbaceous aquatic plant described from Early Cretaceous of China as three species Archefructus liaoningensis, A. sinensis and A. eoflora. The axes usually bear up to 60 helically arranged carpels including two to four ovules. Leaves are small and pinnately dissected. The evolutionary position of this early angiosperm remains equivocal, but suggests some similarities to the Nymphaeales.
