A force is represented as a vector. When vectors are illustrated in free-body diagrams, their magnitudes and directions are typically presented in one of two formats: as an overall magnitude with angles indicating direction, or in component form with magnitudes along each coordinate axis. In either format, three values are required to fully define a force vector in a 3D system: either the magnitude and two angles, or the magnitudes along each of the three coordinate axes.
