Ice Regelation

by STEAM3D

Description

This model demonstrates a classic experiment where a weight-loaded wire sling passes through a block of ice without cutting it apart, as the plane of separation refreezes. This phenomenon is known as the regelation of ice. The common explanation for this is largely based on the unique properties of water, specifically the decrease in melting temperature with increased pressure. However a significant aspect of the explanation is the role of heat conduction. When the experiment is repeated using wire with lower heat conductivity (such as nylon), the regelation effect disappears.
