The basic principle of a **vacuum toilet** system involves using differences in air pressure to transport waste from toilets. A vacuum pump generates the necessary vacuum directly in the piping system, which is maintained at a constant vacuum level throughout. When the flush button or switch is activated, a valve in the toilet opens, allowing water and air to be sucked into the piping system because of the vacuum. As waste moves through the vacuum piping, it is affected by gravity and eventually flattens. To maintain efficient flow, the waste "slugs" are re-formed within the pipes. The vacuum is created by one or more pumps, and the waste is macerated before being transported to a sewage treatment plant or collection tank for disposal.
