Cup Anemometer

by STEAM3D

Description

An **anemometer** is a device used to measure wind speed. It typically consists of four hemispherical cups mounted on four horizontal arms, arranged at 90° angles from each other. These arms are attached to a vertical shaft that rotates freely in response to the wind. The anemometer operates mechanically using wind power. The airflow causes the arms to rotate because the concave side of each cup creates more resistance than the convex side, driving the rotation. This design ensures that all four cups are continuously exposed to the wind, regardless of its direction. The speed of the rotating cups differs from the actual wind speed; in the model shown, the speed at the ends of the horizontal arms is approximately one third of the actual wind speed.
