Description

The lock is composed of several components and used to adjust the water level. Its function is based on the principle of communicating vessels, in which the liquid level rises to the same height after a filling. Same height levels are due to the hydrostatic pressure, the size of which depends on the depth. In the model we see a ship calling at a top level and stops in front of the door locks. Subsequently, the tunnel will open the floodgates for the first gate. Due to different levels between the lock chamber and the upper level with the boat comes balancing of water levels. When the water levels are balanced, the valves are closed, the first door lock are opened and the boat can sail into the chamber. Now the difference is between the level of the lock and the lower level. This opens the floodgate a tunnel at the second gate and the level of the lock begins to fall, until it is reduced to the same level. The second door will open and the boat can sail out of the lock and continue along the river downstream.
