Description

Tachometer or a speedometer is a device for measuring vehicle speed.

**Analog eddy current speedometer** is based on the measurement or counting the revolutions or speed per unit of time. Rotation of the wheels is transmitted by the flexible shaft into the tachometer. A permanent magnet is connected to the measuring shaft, and rotates in an aluminum cup (a speedcup). The rotating permanent magnet generates eddy currents that carry the cup with a force proportional to the speed of rotation. A pointer is attached to the cup and a fine torsion spring returns it to its zero position.

**Ribbon speedometer** uses two-color ribbon/tape wrapped on two coils to display the current speed.

**Drum speedometer** replaces the pointer with a two-color drum that is rotated at the current speed.
