Description

A block and tackle is simply a collection of one or more pulleys over which you loop a rope to make it easier to lift things. Pulleys are examples of simple machines. Their main function is to change the direction and value of the tension force in a rope.

Two types of a block and tackle are presented here. A gun tackle has a single pulley in both the fixed and moving blocks with two rope parts supporting the load weight. A double tackle has two pulleys in both the fixed and moving blocks with four rope parts supporting the load weight.

The origin of the pulley is unknown. It is suggested, that the pulley was used in Mesopotamia already in 1500 BC. Also, it is also suggested, that the inventor Archimedes used a machine similar to that of a block and tackle already in 287-212 B.C.
