A **hand pump** is a manually operated device that uses human power and mechanical advantage to move fluids or air from one location to another. Pumps come in many different types and are used around the world for numerous applications. In a suction pump, the pump cylinder and pump valves are located above ground within the pump head. With each stroke of the pump handle, water is gradually drawn up the riser main, into the cylinder, and out through the spout. The valve system is articulated to create a vacuum in one compartment and overpressure in another. To increase the flow, the reciprocating motion may be powered by hand or a motor.
