Polarity of Water Molecule

by Corinth

Description

The oxygen atom has a higher electronegativity than the hydrogen atom, therefore partially absorbing the two shared electron pairs with the hydrogen atoms and forming two polar bonds. As a result, a partially negative charge (shown in red) is generated on the oxygen atom and a partially positive charge on the hydrogen atoms (shown in blue). This unequal distribution of electrons causes the water molecule to be polar.
