The carbon atom has four valence electrons located in the 2s and 2p orbitals. During sp hybridization, one s-orbital and one p-orbital combine to form two equivalent sp hybrid orbitals, leaving the remaining two p-orbitals unhybridized. The sp hybrid orbitals are arranged linearly, 180° apart, along the same axis. The two unhybridized p-orbitals are oriented perpendicular to each other and also perpendicular to the axis of the sp hybrid orbitals.
