Eclipsed and Staggered Conformation of Ethane

by STEAM3D

Description

Single bonds in molecules allow internal rotation, enabling the molecule to adopt different spatial arrangements known as **conformations**. Ethane, for example, can exist in two main conformations: the less stable **eclipsed form**, in which the hydrogen atoms on adjacent carbon atoms are aligned, and the more stable **staggered form**, in which the hydrogen atoms are positioned as far apart as possible.
