Hydrochloric Acid (Hydrogen Chloride)

by Corinth

Description

**Molecular formula:** HCl

**Molar mass:** 36,46 g/mol

**Information:** Hydrogen chloride is a colourless malodorous gas, which forms hydrochloric acid upon contact with water. This acid is strong, volatile, colourless and dissociates or ionizes practically completely in water:

HCl + H₂O → H₃O⁺ + Cl⁻

The mixture of concentrated nitric acid and hydrochloric acid is called Aqua regia because it is capable to dissolve noble metals like gold and platinum.

**Use:** Hydrochloric acid is used in the chemical industry. It is also used in geology in order to detect limestone in rocks.

**Appearance:** Hydrochloric acid is found naturally in gastric acid

(c = 0,15 mol.l⁻¹ ), where it helps with digestion. It can also be contained in volcanic gases.
