**Information:** Potassium nitrate or potassium saltpeter is a water-soluble, crystalline, white powder. It is an ionic compound formed by a potassium cation Na⁺ and a nitric anion NO₃⁻.

**Use:** Like sodium nitrate, it is an important industrial fertilizer. In the food industry, it is used as an additive (E 252) for the preservation of meat products. As an oxidizing agent it is used in pyrotechnics.
