Calcium Hydroxide

by Corinth

Description

**Molecular formula:** Ca(OH)₂

**Molar mass:** 74,093 g/mol

**Information:** Calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) is a strong alkaline, white crystalline substance. It is poorly soluble in water (the suspension is called lime milk). It is an ionic compound containing a calcium cation Ca²⁺ and hydroxide anion OH⁻. The dilute aqueous solution is called lime water.

**Use:** It is formed from the reaction of calcium oxide (calcined lime) with water: CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂. It is used for the preparation of lime mortar (a mixture of slaked lime, water, sand). In the form of lime water, it is used to prove the presence of carbon dioxide.
