Description

**Molecular formula:** HNO₃

**Molar mass:** 63,013 g/mol

**Information:** Nitric acid is a colourless liquid. It is a strong monobasic acid with strong oxidizing effects. Some metals (chromium, aluminum, iron, etc.) are dissolved only by diluted nitric acid while concentrated acid passivates them, i.e. on the surface of the metal, forming the protective oxide layer that prevents further reaction. A mixture of concentrated nitric acid and hydrochloric acid is called aqua regia and can dissolve gold.

**Use:** Nitric acid is an important industrial chemical used for the manufacture of explosives, dyes, fertilizers or drugs.
