Description

Ice molecules, in their conventional form, crystallize in hexagonal crystalline systems. Each molecule of water is regularly bonded to other four molecules by via hydrogen bonding. The hydrogen bond is formed between the electronegative oxygen of one molecule and the electropositive hydrogen of the other molecule. The structure contains empty cavities, therefore ice has a lower density than liquid water and that is why it floats on the surface.
