Carbon Monoxide

by Corinth

Description

**Molecular formula:** CO

**Molar mass:** 28,010 g/mol

**Information:** Carbon monoxide is a toxic, colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that is slightly soluble in water. It is lighter than air. Its toxicity is associated to a strong affinity with hemoglobin. Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin and prevents oxygen transfer in the organism. It arises in the combustion of carbon and organic compounds with insufficient oxygen.

**Appearance:** It is part of the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines and contributes to environmental pollution. It contributes to the formation of acid rain.
