Column Hall of the King Raneferef Abusir in Egypt

by Corinth

Description

The *Raneferef (or also Nefereferef) Column Hall* is part of the funerary complex in *Abusir*, Egypt. The complex consists of an unfinished **pyramid**, which eventually took the form of a *mastaba*, a **funerary temple**, and a previously undiscovered (though mentioned in the sources) **sun temple**. Archaeological excavations have also revealed a large number of papyrus fragments written in *hieratic script* dealing with the management of the temple. They represent a very valuable source of information about the organization of the funerary cults of Egyptian rulers in the *Old Kingdom*. *Ranepherem* was a ruler of the 5th dynasty during the *Old Kingdom* and probably did not live to a great age, as evidenced by the incompletion of his pyramid. Only fragments of the original funerary equipment have survived, including parts of the sarcophagus and the mummy.

Archaeological excavations of the Raneferef complex have been conducted since the 1980s by the *Czech Institute of Egyptology*, which manages the concession of the entire *Abusir* area.
