The pine cone is a specialised structure designed to store pine tree seeds. It acts a protective case. When the seeds are ready, gravity and wind will cause the pine cone to fall and hit the ground. The impact causes the pine cone to 'spring' open causing an explosion of seeds, that disperse them a distance away from the tree.
