Description

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and a central symbol of the Olympic Games. Crafted by the renowned sculptor Phidias in the 5th century BCE, the massive seated figure depicted Zeus, king of the gods, holding a statue of Nike (Victory) in one hand and a sceptre in the other. The statue was over 12 meters high and was richly decorated with gold and ivory, inside the Temple of Zeus. The statue not only represented divine power but also reflected the religious importance of the Games, which were held in Zeus’s honor.
