The helmet and shield used by ancient Greek athletes reflect the close relationship between sport and military training in Greek society. Though Olympic athletes competed in non-lethal events, many of the competitions, such as the pankration and the hoplitodromos (a race run in armor), were inspired by the skills needed in battle. The helmet and shield on display would have been similar to those used by Greek hoplites, showcasing not only craftsmanship but also the pride athletes took in their strength, endurance and discipline.
