Description

Arctic Circle Centre in Norway. The centre is situated approx. 680 metres above sea level on the boundary of the Saltfjellet-Svartisen national park and the area often keeps its Arctic look all year round. In the Saltfjellet mountains there is an abundant flora and fauna as well as a large number of fishing lakes. This panoramic image was taken in late May and at the time there were still snow patches at 50 metres above sea level. The arctic circle marks the southern boundary of the summer midnight sun and in mid-winter the sun will only just rise onto the southern horizon at noon.
