# What is a Colony?{.objective .objective1}

This section briefly details the process of colonisation that was undertaken in the 1600s, including the foundation of the original 13 British colonies. Students look in more detail at the ships offshore and look for clues as to the type of people setting up in the new world.

# Why Were Colonies Established?{.objective .objective2}

Section two looks at the reasons for the British Empire setting up colonies in the Americas, including freedom of religion and seeking a new life. This student activity looks more closely at how people arrived here and what they did to protect themselves.

# Life in a Colonial Town{.objective .objective3}

The final section of this scene looks at what life was like for average people settling in colonial America. Life was very hard and often not what people had expected and we can see evidence of this in the scene with the meagre farms being worked. This activity asks students to look at the evidence in the scene for how people lived and the types of jobs they did.
