Native American Site

Take a trip to the Great Plains area of North America and visit three very different homes as used by different Native American communities of the region.

# Learning objectives

1: To identify what materials were used by different groups of Native Americans to build their homes{.info}

2: To consider how different types of home suggest different cultures and lifestyles{.info}

# Tipi{.objective .objective1}

Used by many hunting and gathering societies such as the Sioux nation, the tipi is one of the most recognisable Native American structures. Students can explore a tipi, including burning fire inside. This section’s task asks students to explore the tipi and consider what it would be like to live inside one.

# Grass House{.objective .objective2}

Typically used by peoples living in warmer climates such as the Caddo nation, grass houses were lighter and had less insulation than a tepee. Students will investigate how the home was made and what advantages it may have had. The task for section two looks at the construction of the grass house and what it tells us about the way of life for people living there.

# Wattle-and-Daub House{.objective .objective3}

These houses were predominantly built by the Cherokee and other tribes who settled in permanent villages. Students can explore the interior which includes a central fire pit and a large pot for cooking meals. This task asks students to explore the outside of the house and think about how it was built as well as the furniture and decoration inside and what it tells us about the people who live there.
