This scene takes the reconstructed form of the Colosseum in Italy. The Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre in the world and was built in Rome under the Flavian emperors of the Roman Empire around 72 AD. The Colosseum is made from travertine limestone, tuff (volcanic rock) and concrete and is 189 meters long and 156 meters wide. It is still the largest free-standing amphitheatre in the world today.

In this section students can learn that the Colosseum was built to be an entertainment venue. Students can explore the colosseum and think about why the colosseum as built in such a specific way. Students should pay particular attention to the shape of the Colosseum and consider who would visit this venue.

Students can observe many of the key features of the Colosseum including the specific seating arrangements the emperor’s box and the hypogeum. Students should also form an opinion on gladiator fighting and who was allowed to visit the Colosseum.
# Why did people visit the Colosseum?{.objective .objective3}
In this section students can learn about gladiators and wild beast fights. Students should pay specific attention to which weapons a gladiator used when fighting and if a gladiators armor was effective or not.
