He needs your help! Could she be hiding in the castle? In this exciting, immersive language experience, students will use their trigraph skills and knowledge to help Alan find his ax and shield, which have been stolen by his mischievous dragon. Landing at the entrance of a mighty trigraph maze, they must solve the word puzzles to navigate through the maze and reach the castle courtyard. On this quest, students will practice and consolidate their knowledge and use of the "igh" trigraph. **Note to Teachers:** This experience is designed to reinforce your students' understanding of trigraphs, three letters representing a single sound, by providing contextual practice. It serves as an excellent follow-up exercise after introducing trigraphs, helping to consolidate their knowledge and assess their grasp of the concept. # Learning Objectives 1. Begin spelling and sounding words that contain the igh trigraph{.info} # Preparing for the Experience Before entering the experience, you can check your student's understanding of trigraphs by briefly reviewing the concept with them. Explain that trigraphs represent a single sound, such as "igh" in "high" and "ear" in "hear." Explain to students that in this experience, they will be entering the trigraph maze, working on solving "igh" trigraphs. Before beginning their adventure, gather your students and read them the story to set the scene. **The Story** Once upon a time, a brave knight named Alan lived in a magical kingdom. He was very brave, but he sometimes lost his things, especially when his mischievous dragon was around! Alan the Knight's dragon has run off with his ax and shield and needs your help to find them! Could Alan’s dragon be hiding in the castle? Jump into this adventure to help Alan find his naughty dragon, ax and shield. Your quest begins at the entrance of a mighty trigraph maze leading to the castle. Read the scrolls to help you get started. Are you ready? Walk over to Alan the Knight. What is he missing? That's right, his ax and shield! Can you help him find them? **Mission** Walk over to the maze entrance. The banners on the left and right will tell you what to do! **Left Banner** Help! Alan the Knight has lost his dragon! Is she hiding in the castle? **Right Banner** Your Mission: Solve the "igh" puzzles in the mighty maze to find the castle. Enter the maze...but watch out for dead ends! ## Quick Fire Questions - What’s your mission? What are the three things you need to find?{.task} ## Six Challenges{.objective .objective2}  Enter the maze and solve the first puzzle. You need to follow the matching word. What do the signs say and what's floating above it? Once you've worked it out, follow the arrow pointing in the correct direction. There are six challenges like this to complete. All you have to do is figure out which word matches the floating object on the pillar. Sound the words aloud; what do they say? **Challenge Riddles** Use the riddles below if students struggle to figure out the object on each pillar. **Challenge One** I zig, I zag, I light up the sky. Well done! ## Quick Fire Questions - What has Alan’s dragon eaten? {.task} # Extended Learning Use this extended task to enhance your *Trigraph Maze* experience. **Trigraph Word Mat** Enter the courtyard and look up at the castle walls. On the shields, you’ll see strange words written on them. Can you figure out what the words say? Some might look familiar from the maze. Use your knowledge from the maze to help you decode them! Each shield contains a word with the “igh” trigraph; can you find them? Write down the words you see and try to use them in a simple sentence. # Cross-Curricular Links **English** Now, imagine the adventure from Alan the Knights’ perspective. Write and draw the story as if you are him! How do you feel about losing your ax and shield? What other naughty things does your dragon do? Who do you turn to for help? **Soft Skills – Critical Thinking and Collaboration** Create your own trigraph "igh" maze with tape and paper. Ask students (the makers) to create a maze on the floor using tape in groups. The maze can have various paths, dead ends, turns and an ending. Each group must create five challenges along the maze path. For each challenge, the makers should write or draw words with the "igh" trigraph (e.g., light, fight, night, flight, high). Appoint students as explorers who will go through the maze. To reach the end, they must correctly decode the "igh" words at each challenge.
