Description

Distribution: North America and Eurasia Size: 46‒51 cm Weight: 0.5‒1.4 kg Lifespan: 2‒4 years Diet: Carnivorous Social life: Solitary IUCN red list status: Least Concern This predator is easily recognized by its elongated, streamlined body with dorsal and anal fins positioned far back. Its body is greenish-brown with seven to nine rows of yellow, bean-shaped spots that provide excellent camouflage, while the underside is lighter in color. The large mouth contains numerous sharp teeth, ideal for capturing prey. Females are larger than males and grow at a faster rate. Spawning occurs in spring, typically during the day. Both sexes swim together near vegetation, releasing eggs and sperm simultaneously. Females lay between 5 and 60 sticky eggs that adhere to plants; young pike hatch after 10 to 15 days. This species is solitary and highly territorial. As carnivores, they use their sharp teeth to prey on smaller fish, crustaceans, frogs, and occasionally small birds and mammals.
