Description

Lions are the only truly social cats forming prides. Those consist mostly of several females and their offspring and a dominant male. The males who are not members of any pride live solitary or form bachelor groups, mostly sibling, and occasionally fight for the dominance in a pride and opportunity to mate. The dominant male in pride changes approximately every two years while the females stay for the whole life.

In Lions the sexual dimorphism is clearly apparent, males are larger in body and the prolonged hair on their heads, necks and shoulders form the mane.

Females of the pride or males from the bachelor groups cooperate while hunting to increase their chances to chase the prey successfully. Their diet consists mostly of large ungulates as antelopes, zebras or wildebeests. It is not rare that the lions steal the prey from smaller carnivores.
