Male Fern (Dryopteris Filix-Mas)

by Corinth

Description

The male fern is a plant occurring throughout most of the northern hemisphere. It thrives in shadowed places in humous soils but does not prefer damp substrate. Leaves of the male fern grow from a rhizome. They are curled when young and at this stage, they can be called fiddleheads. Rounded clusters of sporangia are located on the back of the leaves. The related lady fern’s clusters are shaped like croissants. The spores mature and are released in fall and then the leaves wither before winter.
