The Norway spruce is one of only two spruce species native to Europe. It is an economically important conifer and is frequently cultivated in monocultures. With a shallow root system, it is prone to uprooting. The tree's needles are dark green and can grow up to 2 cm (0.8 inches) in length. Mature cones hang downward and remain intact rather than breaking apart. Norway spruce wood is valued for crafting the top plates of guitars and other string instruments, such as violins and double basses. It is also an important resource in paper production. ## Keywords plants conifers conifers Pinales Pinaceae
