Description

The date palm is cultivated for its sweet fruit, the date. An old saying describes the palm as growing with "its feet in the water and its head in the fire," highlighting its ability to thrive in regions with high temperatures, low humidity and sufficient underground water sources. The date palm is dioecious, meaning it has separate male and female plants. In commercial plantations, mainly female plants are grown, while the inflorescences of a few male plants are used for manual pollination. Every part of the date palm is used: fibers from the leaves and trunk are crafted into baskets, ropes and camel saddles. ## Keywords Plantae Angiosperms Monocots Commelinids Arecales Arecaceae Phoenix dactylifera
