Description

Barley belongs to the grass family (Poaceae). It has been grown for 10,000 years and its wild relative still can be found in Western Asia and Northeast Africa today. The caryopses (dry fruits) of barley have long awns, which is why the spikes are “furry”. It can be made into groan and was used as a part of coffee substitute. It can also be ground to flour or used as animal fodder. Malt is obtained by germinating and subsequently drying the grains. It is one of the main ingredients in beer brewing.
